Announcing Java updates of Oct 21, 2025 for 8, 11, 17, 21, and 25: thoughts and resources

It's that time again: there are new Oracle JVM updates released today (Oct 21, 2025) for the current long-term support (LTS) releases of Oracle Java, 8, 11, 17, 21, and 25. (The previous short-term release, Java 24, is no longer updated.)

TLDR: The new updates are 1.8.0_471 (aka 8u471), 11.0.29, 17.0.17, 21.0.9, and 25.0.1, respectively. More on the updates below, including links to more info on each of them including what changed, bug fixes, and the security fixes each version contains. (I also offer a quick assessment of the updates with respect to my primary audience, users of CFML engines.)

I always wait for Adobe to release it thinking that meant they have tested it with the latest builds of the supported CF versions. Is that not the case and just wishful thinking on my part? :-)

That may well be their assertion, if pressed.

Still, as I note the Java update release dates are known a year in advance. So such testing can seemingly be done the day it comes out, if not previously before that based on a prerelease (which they, as an enterprise licensee might have access to).

It's now been a week, and sadly still not posted. But that's indeed why I offer the Oracle links. Some folks may want to begin their own testing the day it comes out.
Have any folks reported issues with Amazon Corretto 11 latest and ColdFusion 2021 on the latest HF? Getting errors on 2 different servers.

Chris, I'll say first that "no, I have not heard that". I realize you're asking "everyone" here.

Second, as for what you're experiencing, the specifics of the error might better help identify what's amiss. Also, are you saying you ONLY did the CF update and NOT any change to Java? Solving whatever is amiss for you might be better done as a screenshare consulting engagement rather than back and forth here (as I highly doubt your problem is due to the CF update alone).

Finally, I'll repeat and elaborate on what I clarify in my post above: be aware Adobe does NOT support you running anything but Oracle Java. I understand why some PREFER to use alternative JVMs--and it may have "always worked". I'm simply saying it's not supported by Adobe, so you do it at your own risk.

And have others used non-Oracle JVMs? Sure. Have I helped them solve problem using them? Sure. Most problems really are not about the alternative JVM.

Do folks NEED to use an alternative JVM? Not for the sake of CF itself. Often folks do it out of licensing concerns (Oracle pricing for Java is outrageous.) But it's important to note that Adobe *licenses Java for our use of it with CF*.

You do NOT need to pay for your use of Oracle java with CF. (Conversely, you can't use that java for any other purpose, or yes the Oracle goon squad could try to bankrupt you with their fees.) The licensing of Oracle Java by Adobe is discussed (by the CF Product Manager) here:
https://coldfusion.adobe.com/2023/11/oracle-java-support-for-adobe-coldfusion-2021-2023/

And yes, that applies to CF2025 as well as all earlier versions. FWIW, I link to that post and discuss the matter further in the other post of mine that I point to, as the final link in my post here.

So again, while you await hearing if anyone else can concur with your Corretto experience, if they do not or you find no help elsewhere, reach out to my via my contact page here as I suspect there may be a different explanation and solution to whatever is amiss.
Adobe has now posted the Java updates.
