Long-time CFer needing to find new non-CF work? You may know more than you realize

Note: This blog post is from 2017. Some content may be outdated--though not necessarily. Same with links and subsequent comments from myself or others. Corrections are welcome, in the comments. And I may revise the content as necessary.
Hey CFers: if you're thinking of getting (or are being forced) out of CF, and feel you can't find work, do you feel stuck? You probably know a lot more in terms of marketable skills than you may think.

This is a follow-up to my last post, Looking for CF people, or CF work? What can you do?.

In that one, I focused mostly on helping someone who WANTS to stay in CF, or as important, those who HAVE WORK TO OFFER in CF but have a hard time finding people.

Now this is for someone on the other side of the fence, who is now out of work in CF (by choice or circumstance) and needing to find work OUTSIDE of CF, and can't wait to develop new skills.

I think Dave Ferguson said it best on the CFHour podcast years ago... don't think of yourself as a CF developer, think of yourself as a "web developer" including all of the ancillary technologies that go along with it. CF is still my bread and butter, but I have my hands into SQL Server (query tuning is fun!), Internet security, devops, Node.js, a barrage of front-end technologies, and even mobile with React Native. There's so much more than "just" ColdFusion. It's just one tool in the toolbox.

Yep. :-)
I always had so much trouble getting recruiters to understand that I meant when I said I wanted resumes from people who did web development. I would list CFML as the preference, but I always made clear I would love to talk to .NET, Java, PHP, Ruby, and other devs. Recruiters would then send out feelers for "must have CF" ... NO!! Any good web dev can learn any other web dev language, in my experience, so send me good names and let me hire good people whom I can train, please!

Amen. :-)
As a long-time-CFer-turned-DBA, I can relate first hand to the struggle of landing a job doing something different. For any of those that may be in this situation, and considering a job as a SQL Server DBA or Developer (or if you just want to get better at SQL Server!), I would highly recommend going through some of the video courses at Microsoft Virtual Academy. (https://mva.microsof...) They are completely free, and cover a wide range of SQL Server topics.

In fact, if you're interested in ANY Microsoft technology, the Virtual Academy is an excellent learning resource that many people are not aware of.
Great stuff, Eric. Thanks for sharing.
